Guidelines for Posters and Presenters

Poster Guidelines

  • Presenters will offer a brief synopses of their research.
  • The goal of the poster is to be a visual guide to reference while you present your findings.
  • The poster should be clear and hold a singular message while identifying and emphasizing the research conducted.

General Poster Structure

  • Poster size should be 36 inches by 48 inches. This is standard in the fields of science and engineering.
  • Poster should read left to right and top to bottom.
  • Three column designs are common.
  • Less is more, clear message is best.
  • Results and conclusion of the research should be on the right side of the poster.
  • References and acknowledgments are listed at the bottom.
  • Make all your own figures (preferred) or cite them appropriately. Avoid plagiarism.
  • The use of graphs should be used over tables.

How to Develop a Poster

  • Present the motivation of your research.
  • Present a short background of the topic presented.
  • Identify the most significant aspects in the field of study.
  • Select and report only key results.
  • Present the process of relevant data collection details.
  • Highlight the novelty of your approach.
  • Identify and present possible further development.
  • Figures should be large, clear and well labeled. Be sure to include all necessary figures.
  • Use short phrases and bullet points to keep the text interesting.
  • Include enough information for people to follow along in the event you are called away.
  • Practice your presentation several times. Be sure to ask colleagues and non-field experts.

Speakers for OUR events are leading authorities in the field of research. Speakers represent distinguished, sought-after leadership. Throughout the conferences, you will find the speakers are visionaries, innovators and subject matter experts.

Arriving at the conference

When you first arrive at the conference for your speaking engagement, look at the event program to see your session time.

When to arrive

Try to arrive 10 minutes prior to your session start time. This will allow for introduction to the session host. As well as set up time for your presentation.

Presentation material

If your presentation contains animations or movies, please make sure those are embedded in your presentation or uploaded separately on the conference laptop.

Presentation time limit

Each speaker will have ample time to present. The session chair will signal when there is one minute left in your time slot in order for you to wrap up the speech.
